Signal and Telegram are two of the world’s most popular encrypted messaging apps, and in the wake of the Russian invasion of their country, Ukrainians are downloading encrypted communication apps, offline maps, and others where they can keep up with the latest news.
In a tweet sent out earlier today, the co-founder & CEO of Cloudflare Matthew Prince revealed that the private messaging app Signal’s traffic has surpassed that of Telegram for the first time in Ukraine.

Signal is believed to be the most secure messaging app, offering end-to-end encryption, with no data collected beyond an account creation date. Telegram, on the other hand, does not offer end-to-end encryption by default, although it allows users to manually enable an encrypted “secret chats” feature.
Signal’s founder Moxie Marlinspike recently took to Twitter to remind Ukrainians that Telegram was not secure.\

Signal currently also tops the list of most downloaded apps in the Google Play Store in Ukraine.
