Xplornet announced on Friday its fibre-to-the-premises network has now reached availability to 270 homes and businesses in Prince Edward Island, and over 3,700 Islanders.
Locations in Vernon Bridge, along with communities such as Millview, Vernon River, Pownal, Mount Mellick, Alexandra, Alberry Plains, Belfast, Summerville and Eldon, now have access to the Xplornet fibre network.
The company says it is installing over 600 kilometres of fibre optic cable across the province, as it continues to connect the Maritimes with high speed internet. Xplornet says it is also upgrading its fixed wireless towers to bring download speeds of up to 100 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 10 Mbps to an extra 17,000 homes and businesses by the end of next year.
“Today’s announcement is an exciting first step in connecting rural Islanders to next-generation broadband technology,” said Allison Lenehan, President and CEO, Xplornet Communications Inc., in a statement.
Vernon Bridge and other surrounding areas now have access to gigabit download speeds with unlimited data usage. In the coming months, an extra 150 homes and businesses will gain access to the fibre network, and more areas to come throughout 2022.
