Rogers to Shut Down ‘Stream Saver’ That Lowered Video Quality to Save Data

Rogers has started notifying customers its Stream Saver feature that debuted in September 2017 is coming to an end this week.
According to text messages sent out by the wireless provider seen by iPhone in Canada, Rogers says Stream Saver will cease to function on Wednesday, July 29, 2022.
The company says Stream Saver within a customer’s MyRogers account will no longer be available and any video quality settings you have set up will be turned off. Instead, Rogers says you can now control video quality settings through individual streaming apps.
“We apologize for the inconvenience,” wrote Rogers, noting customers should contact the company if there are issues.
Stream Saver when it debuted was marketed as allowing customers to “watch up to 3 times more video with the same amount of data that is in your current plan.”
With the setting enabled, streaming video would show in standard definition (like DVD quality) instead of high definition quality. Stream Saver launched before current ‘unlimited’ data plans and the larger data buckets we have today. Streaming apps do also allow for controlling mobile data and video quality.
We’re not sure how many people actually took advantage of Stream Saver, but clearly, it’s not worth keeping around if Rogers is looking to axe it.
We’ve reached out to Rogers for comment on the shut down of Stream Saver and will update this story accordingly.
Thanks Troy

That’s too bad. I put it on my wife’s phone and it drastically lowered the data she used browsing SNS for hours. It made a noticeable difference. She never complained about the low quality of videos. Too bad!
I expect that you’ve hit upon the reason they are getting rid of it.
Was it not the case that on most video streaming sites / applications. That’s stream saver not longer worked with the standardised transition of HTTPS traffic which removes streamsavers ability to save you data?
I guess it was a pretty bad look that they were marketing everything you could do with the lightning fast 5G connection, but gave you so little data that they had to lower all the video resolution to 1990’s-era quality
That’s partially true, but the fact is that stream saver is not a Rogers’ invention. It is in fact something that most US carriers have deployed at the moment as well.
I think this has more to do with Rogers hoping to nickel and dime customers on overages on account of wanting to increase their ARPU.

Huh I actually found it useful, considering the average data plan in Canada is smaller than the known universe…
When I used my phone or hotspot I really can’t tell it’s 480p and it’s great to save it for real use.
Maybe they’re upgrading the core network and a feature like this is getting in the way?
Very upset by this. As a long haul truck driver, I have a 32″ tv set up in the bunk. I use it all monthly. Now, my bill will at least 2x. My smart tv apps like Netflix and Amazon do not allow me to stream in standard definition. I came to Rogers specifically for this feature, and now, I might have to get a Starlink system. Customer retention at Rogers basically said FU. Not a satisfied customer any longer.
