The Canada Revenue Agency has rolled out a new identity validation service that makes it easier to access online services such as My Account, My Business Account, and Represent a client.
This document verification service lets Canadians use government-issued photo ID such as passports or driver’s licences to instantly validate their identity and get instant access to their online CRA accounts.
Previously, the process to register for CRA’s digital services involved requesting a security code via snail mail, a process that took up to 10 business days. This new ID verification service instead gives instant validation, but the mail option is still available.
Using online CRA services lets you update personal details, register for direct deposit, and to see if you have uncashed cheques. The purpose of online access is to bring self-serve options to avoid phone calls and other delays during tax season.
“20.5 million Canadians already use the CRA’s digital services. We hope this new solution will encourage more people to register and more easily access the information they need to do their taxes and get the benefits they’re entitled to,” said Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of National Revenue, in a statement on Thursday.
How to use this new identity verification method? Users must be at least 16 years old and have a mobile device with a camera to snap a photo of their government-issued ID, along with a selfie. Accepted forms of ID include a Canadian passport, driver’s licence, or a Provincial/Territorial ID card.

In addition to the ID photo, registration for My Account requires the your social insurance number, date of birth, and details from your most recent tax return.
The deadline to file your tax return for the 2023 tax year is April 30, 2024.
