Netflix to End Support for Older Apple TV Generations in July

Netflix has announced it will cease support for Apple TV 2 and 3 devices starting July 31, 2024.
In an email to users shared on Reddit (via 9to5Mac), Netflix stated, “You’re receiving this email because you’ve used Apple TV (2nd generation) and/or Apple TV (3rd generation) with Netflix in the past. Unfortunately, we’re sunsetting support for these devices on Jul 31, 2024. We know this can be frustrating, but we’re doing this to ensure you maintain the best possible Netflix viewing experience.”
This change means the Netflix app will no longer function on the Apple TV 2 with 720p and powered by A4 chip (released in 2010) and Apple TV 3 with 1080p powered by A5 chip (released in 2012) models. These older units came with pre-installed apps and do not support the tvOS App Store. But these older Apple TV units at one point saw high demand as it was possible to jailbreak them and install other software.
Users will need to upgrade to a newer Apple TV model to continue accessing Netflix.
While this change may be inconvenient for some users, the 14 and 12 years of support provided for these devices is considered pretty decent in the electronics industry.
The newest Apple TV 4K is available for $168 and comes with an improved remote compared to these older versions. Time to open your wallet, eh?

For an older TV, just get a Roku or Fire Stick?
It's funny, most shows on Netflix are 720p or 1080p, it makes little sense that the older Apple TV devices would no longer work other than bloated software. Perfectly good hardware tossed the wayside.
