Google Starts Rolling Out Android 17 Motion Sickness Feature

Google has officially started rolling out Motion Assist, a long-awaited accessibility feature for smartphones running Android 17. The tool places subtle, animated visual cues along the edges of the display while you travel inside a moving vehicle like a car, bus, train, or plane (via Android Authority).

The initial staged rollout has begun appearing on select Google Pixel hardware, giving users a way to scroll through social feeds, read news, or watch content while riding passenger without feeling nauseous.

Motion sickness occurs when your brain receives conflicting information from your eyes and your inner ear. While your body feels the physical movement, acceleration, and turns of a vehicle, your eyes remain fixed on a static phone screen, making your brain assume you are sitting still.

Motion Assist bridges this visual-sensory gap by placing small animated dots along the left and right borders of the screen. Powered by system sensors, these dots move dynamically in real time to match the motion of your transport:

• Accelerating: Dots shift toward the bottom of the screen.
• Braking: Dots slide toward the top of the display.
• Turning: Dots move sideways to reflect the direction of centrifugal force.

Because these indicators float at the perimeter of your field of vision, your brain continuously registers spatial motion while your primary focus stays locked on the main content on your screen.

Motion Assist renders cleanly over every third-party application as well as deep system UI menus without flickering or disappearing. If you want to check whether your device has received the feature, follow these steps:

1. Open your phone’s main Settings app.
2. Select Your profile at the top, then tap All services.
3. Scroll down to the Personal & device safety section.
4. Tap Motion Assist and switch the primary toggle to On.

Because the rollout is tied to Google Play Services updates on Android 17, availability remains phased across different devices.
