Telus has been recognized by TIME Magazine and Statista in their inaugural list of the World’s Most Sustainable Companies, ranking 21st out of 500 global companies.

B.C.-based Telus was the second most sustainable Canadian company and the most sustainable telecom in Canada. Rogers and Bell were not part of the top 500 global companies list.

How did TIME Magazine and Statista come up with their list? Both explained, “the companies at the top of the list have signed on to some of the most respected climate programs, including the 1.5°C target from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), and receive high scores from CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project).”

“TIME and Statista further held companies to high standards for their Scope 1 and 2 emissions and energy consumption relative to company size, emissions reductions in 2021 and 2022 (the most recent years fully reported), and proportion of renewable energy used by the company’s operations,” it said earlier this week.

Telus says the selection process involved a four-step process and data analysis that considered over 20 key performance indicators, including emissions and energy intensity, and disclosure of sustainability to investors, as assessed by the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) and Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP).

The Big 3 telco achieved an “A- leadership” ranking in its operations. Consulting firm Stantec ranked 14th ahead of Telus at 21st in the list, while the only other Canadian company in the top 100 was consulting firm WSP at 53rd.

“Our team’s commitment to sustainability is foundational to our leadership in social capitalism. Indeed, earning recognition as the top-ranking Canadian communications company in respect of sustainability by TIME Magazine reinforces our dedication to not only eliminating our carbon footprint but also helping proactively improve the health of the planet our children will inherit, while also creating meaningful value for our fellow citizens,” said Darren Entwistle, President and CEO of Telus, in a statement to iPhone in Canada.

For those wondering, Apple, despite its current environmental efforts, only ranked 313th out of 500.

Telus has committed to greenhouse gas emission reduction targets and is on track to become a carbon-neutral company by 2030 or sooner.
