Amazon Launches 3D ‘Gaming Zone’ Online Showroom With Mixed Results

Amazon has launched its ‘Gaming Zone’ online showroom, a new way for customers to browse and purchase games through its website.

The Gaming Zone showroom is a bizarrely constructed 3D space where customers can navigate various games and genres. It’s constructed as a neon and retro-inspired version of a Blockbuster where customers can point and click through several areas.

The main walls are where the latest games and upcoming anticipated titles like Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 are available. Clicking on any will take you to a pop-up window to see its price, and expected delivery time, and select a platform. You can also add it to your cart or see more details. Depending on the title, you can also select whether you’d like to purchase a Limited Edition of the game or another Collector’s Edition. Due to it having only launched this week, it’s not yet known how often the games will rotate.

Below, the Gaming Zone is broken up by genre. Customers can glance over the biggest games ranging from ‘Family’ to ‘Action’ or ‘Horror. Once again, you can browse all games by clicking over the little marker. On the right-hand side of the 3D space is a collection of consoles and peripherals. Amazon lays out everything from the PlayStation 5 Slim to the Xbox Series X and Nintendo Switch (OLED Model). You can even take a closer look at the Logitech G Astro A50 headset.

Amazon has also partnered with Arcade1Up to show off some of its arcade cabinets. This includes its Golden Tee 3D Deluxe machine and Pac-Man. There’s also a 32-inch Infinity gaming table in the middle of the room. Unfortunately, none of the machines are playable.

Of course, what’s a gaming experience without some Redbull? The Gaming Zone is littered with Redbull cans, all of which when clicked on will take you the option to purchase a 12 or 24-pack.

Arguably, it’s not the easiest to navigate between sections. Once you’ve taken a look at one side of the Gaming Zone, you have to use your mouse to swing your view away before clicking on the other side of the 3D virtual space. It’s a little clunky overall and easy to accidentally click a game or an area of the room by mistake. The timing of this release is also odd. This feels like a very early 2010s marketing initiative. Hopefully, Amazon can massage this and make the experience a bit more user-friendly.
