New Apple ‘Home Accessory’ and Apple TV Discovered in Code
Apple is developing a new home accessory, as revealed by code found on its backend by MacRumors.
The device, identified as “HomeAccessory17,1,” indicates a new product category similar to the HomePod’s “AudioAccessory” identifier. The inclusion of “17,1” suggests it may feature Apple’s upcoming A18 chip (rumoured for the iPhone 16 this fall), meaning it will support Apple Intelligence.
This accessory is expected to run a variant of tvOS, akin to the HomePod.
In addition to the new home accessory, the code also mentions two unreleased Apple TV models with identifiers AppleTV14,4 and AppleTV14,5, suggesting that Apple may update its Apple TV lineup in 2024.
Back in April, sources told Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman Apple is exploring the automation of household functions and a new Apple TV set-top box featuring a built-in camera for FaceTime and gesture-based controls, designed to integrate seamlessly with iPhones and Vision Pro.
As part of this strategy, Apple is considering a lightweight smart display similar to a basic iPad. This device could be moved between rooms and charged at various hubs throughout the house. While small-scale test production has begun, Apple has not yet decided whether to proceed with full-scale production, said Gurman. It’s unclear if this home accessory is tied to the code shared by MacRumors.
When September rolls around, Apple is expected to unveil its latest iPhones, iPads and possibly more. Stay tuned.
