Google to Launch ‘Google TV Streamer’ as Successor to Chromecast

In April, it was reported that Google was developing a successor to its 2020 Chromecast with Google TV 4K. Today, 9to5Google has claimed that the upcoming device will be branded as the “Google TV Streamer.”

In a departure from the compact dongle design that discreetly plugs into your TV, Google is opting for a set-top/table-top configuration. Images shared with the source reveal a sleek, slanted, pill-shaped surface. This design is notably wider than typical streaming boxes.

The form factor could potentially support Ultra Wideband-powered Tap to Cast, a feature introduced for the Pixel Tablet earlier this year.

The Google TV Streamer includes a sleek base, reminiscent of a miniature Pixel Tablet Charging Speaker Dock. Two cables, likely for power and HDMI, extend from the back of the device, maintaining a minimal height profile underneath your television.

The accompanying remote has undergone subtle changes, retaining a similar appearance but with increased length. Post the D-Pad, the first row features back and home buttons. The voice input key now sports a generic microphone icon instead of the Google Assistant branding.

The home button stands out with a raised bump and a splash of color. Other modifications include repositioning the volume rocker to the face of the remote from its previous location on the right edge and introducing a new mute button.

The Google TV Streamer remote also includes dedicated shortcuts for YouTube and Netflix, alongside power and a versatile “Magic” or star button.

It remains uncertain whether Google will continue selling the Chromecast with Google TV (HD), although this change aligns with the recent transition from “Google Cast” to replace the “Chromecast built-in” brand earlier this year.
