OpenAI SearchGPT Waitlist: AI Comes to Search

OpenAI on Thursday announced it is testing SearchGPT, a temporary prototype of new AI search features that provide users with fast and timely answers, drawing from clear and relevant sources. The prototype aims to combine the capabilities of OpenAI’s models with real-time web information.
SearchGPT right now is only available for a select group of users and publishers to gather feedback. Interested users can join the waitlist to try out the prototype.
Designed to simplify the search process, SearchGPT is making it quicker and easier to find relevant information on the web. The AI-powered search tool promises to provide direct responses with current information, complete with clear links to sources, which is super nice.

Not only that, SearchGPT brings follow-up questions, mimicking a natural conversation and building on shared context with each query, similar to ChatGPT. You can’t do that with Google searches right now, for example.
OpenAI says it is committed to supporting publishers and creators by prominently citing and linking to publishers in search results.
“AI search is going to become one of the key ways that people navigate the internet, and it’s crucial, in these early days, that the technology is built in a way that values, respects, and protects journalism and publishers,” said Nicholas Thompson, CEO of The Atlantic, in a statement.
OpenAI is also introducing tools for publishers to manage their presence in SearchGPT, providing more control over how their content is displayed. SearchGPT is separate from the generative AI training models, ensuring sites can appear in search results even if they opt out of AI training.
Future plans include bringing features for local information and commerce, and incorporating feedback from users and publishers. The best elements of SearchGPT will eventually make its way into ChatGPT. You can click here to join the SearchGPT waitlist (you’ll get an email if you’re invited).
When Apple releases iOS 18 and other new operating systems for iPad and Mac, ChatGPT will be integrated.
