Apple to Start Manufacturing ‘Pro’ iPhone Models in India

In an effort to expand its global manufacturing footprint, Apple will begin producing its flagship iPhone ‘Pro’ models in India for the first time, MoneyControl is reporting (via MacRumors).

Apple initiated its iPhone production in India back in 2017 with the original iPhone SE. Over the years, the company has progressively ramped up its manufacturing operations in the country, assembling models like the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14.

However, these models were typically produced several months after their global launch. This trend saw a change with the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, which were manufactured and made available in India from their global release date.

The upcoming production of the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max in India marks a new chapter in Apple’s manufacturing journey. Foxconn, Apple’s long-term partner, will manage the production at its Sriperumbudur facility in Tamil Nadu.

The New Product Introduction (NPI) process is set to begin soon, with mass production slated to commence following the official launch of the devices.

This move is a part of Apple’s broader strategy to lessen its dependence on China and to capitalize on the burgeoning manufacturing capabilities in India. The company aims to produce a quarter of all its iPhones in India over the next few years, a significant increase from the current 14%.

Apple’s substantial investment in India is indicative of its confidence in the country as a manufacturing hub. The company plans to produce 90 million units of the iPhone 16 lineup in 2024, a 10% increase compared to the previous year’s production of iPhone 15 models.

In addition to the iPhone 16 Pro models, Apple is also exploring the possibility of manufacturing other products in India. Recent reports suggest that the company is considering the production of iPads in India for the first time. Moreover, there are rumours that Apple might start manufacturing AirPods in the country later this year.
