Apple Now Makes 1 in 7 iPhones from India, Doubling Production: Report

Apple looks to be continuing its efforts to diversify its supply chain away from China, as more iPhones are being made in India compared to a year ago.

Sources inform Bloomberg that Apple has doubled its production in India year-over-year, with assembly worth $14 billion in the last fiscal year. That works out to roughly 14% of iPhones or 1 in 7 being made in India now, say sources.

The iPhone effect is said to have generated 150,000 jobs through Apple’s suppliers in India. The majority of these iPhones made in India were at factories from Apple partners Foxconn and Pegatron. The remainder were produced by Wistron, which was recently acquired by Tata, with the latter set to build one of the largest iPhone factories in the country.

Production in India has seen the iPhone 12 through to the latest iPhone 15 made in the nation, except for the iPhone 15 Pro series.

Why the move away from China? There are geopolitical tensions in the area but at the end of the day, most iPhone production and other Apple products will remain made in China.
