Google Photos AI Editing Features Now Free for Everyone
Google has just made its advanced AI editing tools in Google Photos available to all users without the need for a subscription. These powerful features, including Magic Editor, Magic Eraser, Photo Unblur, and Portrait Light.

“It’s really exciting that so many more people will be able to use these tools,” said Selena Shang, Senior Product Manager at Google Photos.
The rollout was a significant technical challenge, as the engineering team worked tirelessly to ensure these features function seamlessly across a wide range of Android and iOS devices.
“It was definitely a challenge, but worth it,” Shang commented, reflecting on the effort required to achieve this milestone. With the expanded access to these tools, Shang has also shared her top tips for making the most of Google Photos’ AI editing suite.
Layer Edits for Optimal Results
Shang emphasizes the importance of layering edits to achieve the desired photo quality. For instance, she might start with the Portrait preset in Magic Editor, then use the same tool to remove distractions, and finally, adjust the photo’s overall tone and brightness using the standard editor.
Different Tools for Different Tasks
The Magic Editor’s Erase tool and Magic Eraser are designed for different scenarios. While both can remove unwanted elements from photos, they excel in distinct ways. Magic Eraser is ideal for quick fixes on smaller areas of a photo, such as removing people or objects from a background.
In contrast, the Magic Editor’s Erase tool is better suited for removing larger or more complex objects, thanks to its generative AI capabilities.

Selection Methods in Magic Editor
Magic Editor offers three ways to select items for adjustment: tapping, brushing, and circling. Shang has found that different methods work best for different types of objects.
For instance, tapping is effective for objects with clear boundaries, like a water bottle, whereas brushing or circling is better for objects with less distinct edges, such as tree leaves. If precision is needed, users can zoom in to make more accurate selections.
Utilizing the Strength Slider
Many of Google Photos’ AI editing tools include a strength slider, allowing users to adjust the intensity of an effect. This feature is particularly useful for achieving subtle enhancements.
“What your photos look like is up to you — now you just have a bigger (and smarter) toolkit,” Shang remarked.
As more users gain access to these tools, the potential for creating stunning images with ease and precision will expand exponentially.

One important feature missing after all these years is a feature to detect and remove duplicate photos. The "stack similar photos" never worked for me. Thank you Google! 🤦♀️
And yet still, I have no desire to give Google access to my photos…
Let's keep giving away the paid perks for free. Then we will have no reason to pay. I am a paid subscriber and don't like seeing things like this. Besides that, the features have been very handy.
