PlayStation 5 Sales Reach 61 Million, Reportedly Down Year-Over-Year in Q1 2024 Results

Sony reports that the PlayStation 5 has reached 61.7 million units sold since its launch in November 2020. However, as part of its Q1 2024 financial results, hardware sales have declined year-over-year.

PlayStation 5 sales have taken a bit of a downturn this past quarter, Sony reveals. As reported by VGC, the company’s latest financial results (covering April 1 to June 30) show that 2.4 million units were sold. Comparatively, this is down from the 3.3 million units sold during the same quarter last year.

The decline in PlayStation 5 sales couldn’t have been all too surprising to the company. Sony lowered its target console sales for this financial year. The previous target of 21 million from last year was lowered down to 18 million units. The previous target in and of itself was lowered as well, down from 25 million units. Ultimately, Sony ended up selling 20.8 million units by the end of the year, making it a record for sales.

Although PlayStation 5 sales have seemed to cool, Sony’s monthly active users were up compared to last year. Measuring its ability to engage its audience on PlayStation Network, 116 million monthly active users are reported. Now, this figure is slightly down from Q4 2023’s 118 million. However, a year ago, Sony reported 108 million monthly active users.

Sales within Sony’s ‘Games & Network Services’ segment are up 12 percent year-over-year, with operating income up 32 percent. Comparatively, Sony reports its income of $335 million USD is now up to $443 million USD. However, income from software sales is down year-over-year. 53.6 million units are reported to have been sold in Q1 2024, compared to 56.5 million during the same period last year.

Lastly, Sony is adjusting its forecast for its gaming division for its 2024 financial year. Adjustments made see sales and opening income forecasts now up by three percent.
