Spotify Begins Testing Parental-Controlled Family Plan For Younger Listeners

Spotify is pilot-testing a new management system for its Premium Family plan subscription. Focusing on younger listeners below the age of 13, the streaming service enables parents and guardians to better tailor the content their kids listen to.

Announced by the company, the pilot will first launch exclusively for Premium Family plan members in Denmark, New Zealand, and Sweden. With newly added in-app controls, parents can manage the playback of Canvas, videos, and content labelled as explicit. Parents can then decide whether the content is suitable for listeners under the age of 13.

The nice benefit of this new system is that parents and guardians can let their child listen to Let it Go on repeat without it affecting their algorithm and recommendations. Each account under the Premium Family plan membership will have separate recommendations. So, by the time Wrapped season comes around, parents can rest assured their favourite album isn’t the Encanto soundtrack.

Once available to those with a Premium Family membership in Denmark, New Zealand, and Sweden, users can find the option to ‘Add a listener aged under 13’. The app will then prompt users to add the user they wish to manage.

The new management system joins the Spotify Kids app, another way for parents to curate the content their children listen to. The Spotify Kids app is available in Canada, Denmark, New Zealand, Sweden, and 10 other markets.

There’s no word on when the parental management system will come to Spotify in Canada. Once available, it will fold into the perks available through the $16.99 monthly subscription.
