Microsoft introducing new Copilot+ PC experiences, Including the Return of Recall

This month, Microsoft is launching a series of new Copilot+ PC experiences, building off its AI-powered suite of features. Launching on all Copilot+ PC devices, users will soon be able to try features like Click to Do, enhanced Windows Search functions, and Super Resolution support in Photos. Much of this is brought to light using Microsoft’s advanced AI models and generative AI.

This month sees the return of Microsoft controversial Recall feature. Following some additional time in incubation, Microsoft is offering exclusive access to the Recall preview feature. Microsoft has added a slew of new security features for Recall, including firmware prote tion, passkey support, biometric authentications, and enhanced sigh-on security, all on be default.

However, Microsoft’s Recall is only just the beginning, new features are being added to all Copilot+ PC devices running Snapdragon X. However, Microsoft will soon incorporate AMD and Intel silicon parity with Qualcomm silicon starting in November, meaning even more devices will join the Copilot+ PC platform.

Microsoft is reintroducing Recall for Insider preview in October. For the uninitiated, Recall is an AI-powered feature that regularly take screenshots of a PC’s display. Info is then saved on-device for and can be quickly reffered to by the user of Copilot. Upon its launch in preview, users will be able to check out the newly added security features. Microsoft’s new vision for the feature offers many new tailor-made options, with further controls available. For instance, Microsoft hjas made Recall available for opt-in right from the get-go. If you simply don’t want Recall being able to take locally-stored snapshots of your activities on your PC, you can choose to not opt-in. Furthering this, users can also uninstall Recall if you don’t want it on the device.

If you’d like to use Recall but want to manage its permissions and control the feature from a more microbial level, you can choose to do so. This includes adding biometric support so only if you’re in control and using your PC, will your device utilize Recall. With the proof of presence check, you must authenticate with face, fingerprint, or Windows Hello to use Recall. Microsoft is also adding encryption across the board for snapshots, screenshots, and other sensitive data is protected by encryption keys. These are also only unlocked by using biometrics.

Recall was originally meant to be the sticker feature for all Copilot+ PC devices until its divisiness caused Microsoft to go back to the drawing board.  However, thankfully it seems as though Microsoft is taking security to heart. Recall is now being built with new architecture, enhancing the protection of user data. Microsoft confirms ecryptid snapshots and individual keys are protected with a VBS Enclave.

Other features coming to the Copilot+ PC platform is Click to Do, which assists in AI-powered queries. Click to Do is able to read contextual information from the screen and create actions that enhance the user experience. For instance, when looking at a photo, Click to Do can offer the ability to do a Visual Search with Bing, blur the background, erase objects, and remove the background. Click to Do offers support across images, text, and videos. From the way Microsoft explains it, Click to Do is similar to Google’s Circle to Search.

Copilot+ PC devices are also recieving new support across the Photos and Paint apps. Within the Photos app, users can now upscale old and blurry photos with the Super Resolution feature. Microsoft claims that this can be done without oversaturing or adding additional blurriness to a photo. In Paint, users will have more generative AI-powered editing abilities. For instance, you can soon type in text to creature elements for images. Generative AI will also erase properites from your images.

The new Copilot app beings to rollout October 1st with improved Windows Search. Microsoft believes the refreshed Copilot AI experience is “much cleaner, simpler, warmer, and all around more approachable.” The ew AI features for Copilot+ PCs, including Recall to due to arrive later in November.
