Anticipated ‘Orion’ AI Model Not Coming This Year, Says OpenAI

OpenAI has officially stated that it does not plan to release an AI model code-named “Orion” this year, despite recent reports suggesting otherwise.

A company spokesperson clarified via email to TechCrunch, “We don’t have plans to release a model code-named Orion this year. We do plan to release a lot of other great technology.”

Contrary to OpenAI’s statement, The Verge reported that Orion, anticipated to be OpenAI’s next major model, is slated for release by December, with select partners, including Microsoft, gaining early access as soon as November.

Speculation around Orion suggests it could be significantly more powerful than GPT-4, potentially advancing the development of artificial general intelligence (AGI). However, OpenAI’s official stance indicates that while new models are in development, Orion is not scheduled for release this year.

In the meantime, OpenAI continues to enhance its AI offerings. Notably, the company introduced vision fine-tuning capabilities for GPT-4o, allowing developers to fine-tune the model with images, thereby improving its versatility across various applications.

OpenAI has recently launched new tools aimed at simplifying the development of AI voice applications. These tools enable developers to create AI voice apps with a unified process, combining steps that previously required separate stages.

While the AI community may be eager for the release of Orion, OpenAI’s current focus remains on refining its existing models and tools to better serve users and developers.
