ROG Strix SCAR 18 Review

In the ever-competitive world of gaming laptops, Asus’ ROG Strix SCAR 18 emerges as a high-performance powerhouse. The cutting-edge device blends refined power, and design, and matches it with a suite of tools that’ll undoubtedly surprise and impress users. The ROG Strix SCAR 18 leverages a powerful Intel Core i9-14900HX processor to run high-performance games and is a multitasking machine when it comes to content creation.

The ROG Strix SCAR 18 is impressive to look at as well. Its design is firmly rooted in looking like a modern gaming laptop with RGB lighting and a robust size. It also supports an 18-inch 2.5K mini LED display, with a gorgeous colour array and contrast. Of course, with all of this comes a steep $3,999 CAD price tag. While driving exceptional performance, I can’t help but be disappointed by the plastic build of the unit. It’s a premium-priced gaming laptop with premium specs. However, during my time with the ROG Strix SCAR 18, I wish it felt that way when I held it in my hands.

Out of the box

The ROG Strix SCAR 18 is unapologetically bold in its design, following Asus’ design philosophy in so many ways. It features an 18-inch 2.5K ROG Nebula HDR display (2560 x 1600, WQXGA). It provides a wildly bright and crispy display that grabbed my attention right out of the box. It remains one of the device’s highlights thanks to its minimal bezels and 16:9 aspect ratio. For gaming, the mini LED display provides up to 240Hz support and a fast response time of 3ms. You’ll also find Dolby Vision HDR support enabled.

To compensate for the 18-inch screen, the ROG Strix SCAR 18 comes in a 15.71 x 11.57 x 0.91-inch body. Along the sides, Asus has built-in RGB lighting. This gaming flair is also supported across the logo and customizable keyboard. While constructed primarily of plastic finishes, resulting in a durable design. Unfortunately, while paired with an aluminum lid, the ROG Strix SCAR 18 doesn’t look as high-end as its price tag suggests. The use of plastic across the inside also lends itself to fingerprints and smudges. The unit is fairly sizeable so you’ll have to accommodate some desk space when using it as well as have a bag large enough to place it in when travelling. It weighs around 6.8 lbs, making it quite hefty to carry. However, when considering what’s under the hood, it begins to make sense.

Powering the ROG Strix SCAR 18 is an Intel Core i9-14900HX processor with 2.2 GHz (36MB Cache, up to 5.8 GHz, 24 cores, and 32 Threads). It is paired with an Nvidia RTX 4090 GPU. There’s also a 16GB DDR5-5600 with 64GB of dual-channel memory as well as a 2TB M.2 SSD storage. There’s also a 720p camera for party chat calls and work meetings. When looking at ports, you’ll find one HDMI 2.1 port, two USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 ports, and a USB-C 3.2 connection to support DisplayPort and power. Additionally, the ROG Strix SCAR 18 provides a Thunderbolt 4 port, a 2.4G LAN port, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. From my use cases, this is enough to plug in an external hard drive, run the ROG Strix SCAR 18 to an external monitor and have enough ports for accessories like a mouse or microphone.

A visual feast for players

I keep coming back to the display and for good reason. Whether you’re cruising your way through the multiplayer suite of Call of Duty or Marvel’s Spider-Man, you’ll find the visuals supported by the ROG Strix SCAR 18 to be nothing short of impressive. G-Sync support ensures that you won’t see any tearing or stuttering, and the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 handles the heavy lifting without breaking a sweat. I was able to run Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty and Ghost of Tsushima on high settings was effortless for what the laptop is capable of. The former ran at around 100fps at max settings, and I didn’t experience any thermal throttling, thanks to ASUS’s Intelligent Cooling system. The display also supports 100% DCI-P3 colour accuracy, making it a great option for creators who want to edit photos or videos. With a peak brightness of 500 nits, it’s more than capable of producing vivid colours even in the daytime.

To complement the ROG Strix SCAR 18’s display is its cooling system. The machine features a liquid metal thermal compound for the CPU, alongside an efficient array of fans. The fans can get pretty loud when playing more intensive games under strenuous settings. However, even under heavy load, the laptop stays relatively cool. The entire unit is powered by a 90WH battery. On average, I was able to tap the ROG Strix SCAR 18′ for four hours of battery prior to needing a charge. I find this rather typical. Especially considering the display efficiency and power being drawn to play games. However, the battery life could sustain upwards of eight hours when scrolling social media and watching YouTube videos.

Getting the most from your laptop

The ROG Strix SCAR 18 is powered by one of the most efficient processors today. With Intel’s Core i9-14900HX processor and the aforementioned RTX 4080 GPU, this laptop is built to handle not only gaming but also demanding creative workloads like video rendering, 3D modeling, and streaming. Creating video, I was able to have Premier up while also running other pieces of software up in the background. With more CPU-demanding tasks, the i9 processor easily kept pace with my work. Rendering times were significantly faster than many other laptops I’ve tested in the past 12 months. If you’re someone who uses Photoshop, After Effects, or other productivity apps, you’ll be in good hands.

The keyboard is another area where the SCAR 18 shines for productivity. It features a full-sized, per-key RGB backlit keyboard with excellent key travel. The keys are responsive and satisfying to use. For gaming, the WASD keys are highlighted, which is a nice touch if you want a little more tactile feedback when playing. The trackpad itself isn’t as large as I’d prefer. However, it’s incredibly responsive and accurate––something I’m a stickler for.

Final thoughts

The ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 18 is a top-tier gaming and content-creation laptop from Asus. As one of the more impressive units I’ve tested this year, it combines power and functionality. From its massive, stunning display to its cutting-edge performance, it’s clear that ASUS has designed this machine with players at the forefront. It does, however, come with a steep price tag, making the $3,999 unit far from accessible in most cases. However, for being a complete package for gamers and creators, this isn’t one to look over when searching for your next upgrade.
