PlayStation 5 Sales Hit 65 Million, PlayStation Plus Subscriptions Drop

Sony has released its latest financial results, revealing that sales for PlayStation 5 hardware have hit a new milestone. According to Sony, PlayStation 5 has now crossed 65 million units sold.
As first reported by GamesIndustry.biz, Sony revealed that its increased sales revenue is largely attributed to its Game & Network Services division, which would account for PlayStation Plus. Alongside PlayStation Plus subscriptions driving revenue, Sony states its sales of its third-party games and DLC bolstered its growth.
However, while PlayStation 5 console sales have reached a respectable milestone, there is a notable decline in year-on-year sales. During the same quarter last year, Sony reported console sales hit 8.2 million. During this past quarter, PlayStation 5 console sales dropped to 6.2 million.
To counteract diminished hardware sales, Sony reports software sales are up this quarter. 131.3 million games shipped in the first half of the financial quarter. Of this, 11.3 million sales came from first-party titles. One game in particular that boosted Sony’s financials is Astro Bot. Released on September 6th, the game sold 1.5 million copies. It’s also reported that Ghost of Tsushima has now sold 13 million across PlayStation 5 and PC.
As software continues to be a key player in Sony’s business, PlayStation Plus subscriptions did wane. It’s reported that subs have toppled to 116 million. While this metric is up from the 107 million from the same quarter last year, there’s no recognizable growth since last quarter.
“We intend to build on an optimum title portfolio during the current mid-range plan period, that combines single-player games, which are our strength and which have a higher predictability of becoming hits due to our proven IP, with live service games that pursue upside, while taking on a certain amount of risk upon release,” Sony says in its report.
With all of this in mind, the full-year forecast of net sales for the PlayStation business has been revised. Sales were expected to reach ¥4.3 trillion ($28.3 billion) by the end of Sony’s fiscal year (ending March 31, 2025). Now, Sony forecasts that sales may end at around ¥4.5 trillion ($30 billion), a boost of four percent over the initial forecast.
