New AirTag 2 Will Fix the Biggest Issue with Apple’s Tracker

Apple is gearing up to release a second-generation AirTag, nearly four years after the original tracker launched in 2021. AirTag has been indispensable for tracking luggage, kids, pets and your keys.

According to Bloomberg’s reliable Mark Gurman, the new AirTag, code-named B589, is expected to hit the market by mid-2025 and will bring several key upgrades.

While the design will be similar to the current model, AirTag 2 will have better range and improved wireless capabilities, making it more reliable for tracking your stuff. Privacy and safety are also a big focus this time around.

Apple is working to make the new AirTag more tamper-proof, specifically by addressing an issue where the speaker could be removed. Disabling the speaker has been linked to misuse of the device, such as stalking (and stealing cars), so Apple’s changes aim to make this harder and improve overall security.

AirTag 2 is one of several new Apple products expected next year, including updated iPads, MacBooks, and the iPhone SE.

Apple’s existing AirTag has been discounted on Amazon.ca, seemingly hinting at a refresh.
