Roblox has announced a comprehensive upgrade to its safety systems, aimed at improving parental control features, refining communication settings for users under 13, and introducing new content labeling.
The platform now allows parents to remotely manage their child’s Roblox account. By linking their accounts through a verification process, parents can adjust settings, monitor activity, and review their child’s friends list and screen time. This new dashboard enables parents to set daily limits, ensuring a balanced digital lifestyle for their children.
Stephen Balkam, CEO of the Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI), praised Roblox’s proactive approach: “These updates empower parents with flexible controls to oversee their child’s activity, reflecting Roblox’s commitment to safety.”
Roblox is also implementing stricter communication rules for users under 13 to enhance security. Children in this age group will no longer be able to send direct messages outside of games or experiences. Instead, communication will be limited to public broadcast messages within a game, unless adjusted by parents through the new controls.
The platform’s chat filters and moderation tools will continue to operate across all age groups, ensuring safer interactions. Roblox plans to roll out these updates in phases, aiming for full implementation by early 2025.
To further align with family preferences, Roblox is replacing its age-based labeling system with content descriptors. This approach provides clearer information about the type of content users can expect in a game or experience. For younger users, Roblox has updated default settings to restrict access to content labeled as “Minimal” or “Mild.”
Roblox developed these updates based on extensive research involving parents, children, and safety experts. Partnering with organizations like the National Association for Media Literacy Education (NAMLE) and FOSI, the platform aims to balance creative freedom with stringent safety measures.
