Apple Execs Explain How the M4 Chips Set a New Standard

In an interview with The Indian Express, Apple executives shared insights into the company’s silicon philosophy, emphasizing how Apple’s unique strategy enables it to maintain a lead in performance and innovation.

Tim Millet, Apple’s Vice President of Platform Architecture, and Tom Boger, Vice President of Mac Product Marketing, explained how Apple’s approach to chip design has long set it apart from competitors, and its latest advancements with the M4 Pro and M4 Max processors are no exception.

“We don’t build chips for others or profit from selling silicon,” Millet explained during the interview. “Those companies must add margins to their chips, which impacts their ability to innovate as rapidly as we do.”

This difference, he noted, allows Apple to make bold investments in cutting-edge technologies like the second-generation 3-nanometer process, which powers the new M4 chips. “For us, it’s about leaving nothing on the table. These advancements deliver direct benefits to our products and customers,” he added.

Apple’s ability to design chips specifically for its hardware is a key competitive edge. Millet described the collaboration between Apple’s architecture, design, and product teams as the company’s “secret weapon.”

Millet pointed to the Mac mini as a standout example of this integration. “The design and system teams worked hand-in-hand to create a platform that wouldn’t have been possible without our collaborative approach,” he said. This synergy enables Apple to deliver products that excel in performance, battery life, and system design.

Since the introduction of the M1 chip in 2020, Apple has continuously pushed boundaries in silicon performance. The M4 Pro and M4 Max, the latest additions to the M-series, feature what Apple calls the “world’s fastest CPU core,” delivering industry-leading single-threaded performance.

Boger highlighted the speed of this innovation. “Year after year, we’ve maintained this pace, which is uncommon in the industry,” he said. He credited this consistency to Apple’s commitment to delivering the best possible technology as soon as it’s available.
