New Update for PlayStation Portal Includes Cloud Streaming Beta

PlayStation is rolling out a brand new system update for its PlayStation Portal handheld. With the new update, users will gain access to the exciting cloud streaming beta.

The latest system update is starting to roll out today with Europe being the first market gaining access to it. Once available, PlayStation Portal will allow players to stream “select” PlayStation 5 games from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog. The feature will be launching as a beta and be available exclusively to PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers. PlayStation hasn’t revealed the full list of games. However, over 120 PlayStation 5 games will become available.

According to PlayStationDave the Diver, Ghost of Tsushima, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Monster Hunter Rise, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart are all a part of the cloud streaming beta. Unfortunately, as it stands, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 games available via the Premium tier won’t be supported.

During the beta testing, PlayStation Portal will support cloud streaming of up to 1080p at 60fps. The company highlights that to successfully stream at 720p, you’ll require at least 7Mbps. For a more crisp streaming experience with 1080p visuals, PlayStation recommends a 13Mbps connection at a minimum.

Once the cloud streaming beta access is available, players must navigate to the ‘Quick Menu’ on their PlayStation Portal handheld. From there, select ‘Settings’ and then ‘Cloud Streaming (Beta)’. Players can then find the “Cloud Streaming (Beta)” toggle. It’ll be on by default so ensure that it’s selected and turned on. Once complete, players will notice a new option on the Home screen that allows them to access games via cloud streaming.

The update for the cloud streaming beta will roll out to the following countries:

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Cyprus, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and the United States.

PlayStation notes that a series of features won’t be available during the public testing of cloud streaming. This includes Game Trials, streaming games purchased on the PS Store, and party chat functions.

On top of supporting the cloud streaming beta, today’s system update for PlayStation Portal includes audio settings. Players can use an output adjustment setting to make the volume lower when audio levels have reached the minimum. PlayStation Portal also supports the use of adjusting PlayStation Link devices from the Settings menu.
