Citing sources familiar with the matter, Andoid Authority is claiming that Google has scrapped its plans for the Pixel Tablet 2, marking a significant change in its tablet development roadmap.
The original Pixel Tablet, launched in 2023 after a five-year hiatus from Google’s tablet lineup, lacked a dedicated keyboard—an omission that was widely criticized.
The Pixel Tablet 2, which was in its early prototyping stage, was expected to improve on its predecessor with features like a Tensor G4 chipset, enhanced cameras, and a long-awaited keyboard accessory for productivity. Sources indicate that the decision to cancel the Pixel Tablet 2 stemmed from concerns over profitability.
Despite promising upgrades, the tablet reportedly did not align with Google’s financial expectations, prompting the tech giant to halt development. This move comes as a surprise, especially given rumors of both Wi-Fi and 5G versions being in the works, alongside design tweaks that would align the device with the Pixel 9 series.
Confusion initially surrounded reports of the Pixel Tablet 3’s cancellation, but industry insiders clarified that the canceled device, codenamed “Kiyomi,” is indeed the Pixel Tablet 2.
The Pixel Tablet 3, however, remains on track for a 2027 release, potentially featuring a Tensor G6 chipset.
The decision to abandon the Pixel Tablet 2 raises questions about Google’s broader tablet ambitions. The company initially re-entered the tablet market to create a cohesive ecosystem that would complement its Pixel smartphones and smart home devices.
While the Pixel Tablet 3 remains a possibility, it is unclear whether Google will continue investing in tablets or focus on other hardware categories.
