Bluesky Under Fire as EU Demands Transparency on User Data
Bluesky, the emerging social media platform that has gained traction as users depart Elon Musk’s X, is under scrutiny from the European Union for failing to comply with key transparency requirements.

According to the EU, the platform has not disclosed critical information about its operations, including user statistics within the EU and details of its legal establishment, the Financial Times is reporting.
Thomas Regnier, a spokesperson for the European Commission, emphasized that platforms operating in the EU must maintain a dedicated page on their website that lists the number of EU-based users and their legal base of operations. As of now, Bluesky has not met these requirements.
“This is not being followed,” Regnier stated, adding that the Commission had reached out to member states to locate any traces of Bluesky, such as an EU-based office or representative. However, direct communication with the company has yet to occur.
Bluesky’s regulatory issues come as the EU ramps up enforcement of its Digital Services Act (DSA), which aims to curb the spread of illegal content, misinformation, and unsafe products online. While Bluesky does not yet meet the DSA’s criteria for over 45 million monthly EU users, it is exploring avenues to address compliance gaps.
If member states identify an EU-based representative for Bluesky, the Commission plans to establish contact with the company to enforce compliance. Non-compliant platforms face fines of up to 6% of their global annual revenue, with repeat violations potentially resulting in bans within the EU.

The EU’s move to investigate Bluesky’s compliance comes as the platform’s user base continues to grow rapidly, bolstered by discontent with Musk’s X.
Recent shifts in content moderation policies on X, combined with Musk’s endorsement of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, have driven many journalists, academics, and left-leaning politicians to explore Bluesky as an alternative.

I thought the lefties all fled X for mastodon to get their daily echo chamber. Now it’s bluesky.
They all seem to fail. It’s almost like a platform that relies on tantrums for growth isn’t sustainable.
“Bluesky. When you want to take your toys and go home”.
“Bluesky. If you never learned to get along with others”.
“Bluesky. When you need a Safe Space”.
Oh, but some of the commies spilled here as well judging by the downvotes.
Truth hurts… hurling insults and calling people nazi works better.
I won't be missing any of Joy Reid's delirious conspiracies….good riddance.
Yup. You can tell the Bluesky users from the downvotes.
“I get upset when people don’t think exactly like me…waahhh”. Super confident in their ideas and not at all dealing with serious insecurities. /s
