Celebrating 30 Years of PlayStation: The PS2 Legacy Lives On
As Sony gears up for the 30th anniversary of its iconic PlayStation brand on December 3, the company has officially confirmed that the PlayStation 2 remains the best-selling gaming console in history.

Over 160 million units of the PS2 have been sold since its launch in 2000, a record that has stood unchallenged despite the rise of newer consoles.
The PS2’s exceptional popularity stemmed from its diverse library of hit games, including God of War, Shadow of the Colossus, and Ratchet & Clank, as well as its backward compatibility with the original PlayStation.
As the first console with a built-in DVD player, it also became a budget-friendly home entertainment system, contributing to its widespread appeal. The console’s production continued until 2013, giving it a remarkable lifespan of over 12 years.
Sony also shared updated sales figures for its other PlayStation consoles. The PlayStation 4 ranks fifth in overall console sales with 117 million units sold, while the current-generation PlayStation 5 has already surpassed 65 million units. In comparison, Microsoft’s Xbox Series X|S has lagged in sales.

To mark the milestone anniversary, Sony has launched a special website celebrating PlayStation’s history and is releasing limited-edition PS5 consoles inspired by the original PS One.
With the gaming landscape evolving rapidly, the PS2’s legacy serves as a reminder of how revolutionary gaming technology can shape an industry.
