Apple Intelligence Gets a Boost with Amazon’s AI Chips

Apple is using Amazon’s custom artificial intelligence (AI) chips to power services like search and might expand their use for training its own AI models, known as Apple Intelligence.

The announcement came during Amazon Web Services’ annual Reinvent conference, where Apple’s senior director of machine learning and AI, Benoit Dupin, shared insights on their collaboration, reports CNBC.

“We have a strong relationship, and the infrastructure is both reliable and able to serve our customers worldwide,” Dupin said. Apple rarely confirms a reliance on a supplier publicly.

Apple has used AWS for over a decade to support services like Siri, Apple Maps, and Apple Music. Dupin pointed out there was a 40% efficiency boost in search services from using Amazon’s Inferentia and Graviton chips.

The partnership also includes testing Amazon’s new Trainium2 chip, which Apple hopes will improve efficiency in training AI models by up to 50%. This could make Apple’s AI development faster and more cost-effective. This also means Apple is not relying on Nvidia, which sells expensive GPUs to many companies for AI.

AWS CEO Matt Garman revealed that Apple approached Amazon for help with building the infrastructure needed for its generative AI efforts, including Apple Intelligence.

Apple is upgrading all devices with more RAM and newer Apple Silicon to support Apple Intelligence, which continues to roll out super slowly. Soon, an update will integrate ChatGPT and more Siri features.
