Meta’s AI assistant is quickly becoming one of the most popular in the world, with nearly 600 million people using it every month, according to CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Friday. It also helps when Meta AI is built into Messenger, Facebook and Instagram.

Alongside this announcement, Meta has released Llama 3.3, a new AI text model designed to perform at a high level while being much cheaper to use than its predecessor.

Llama 3.3, a 70-billion-parameter model, focuses on text-based applications and offers strong performance in areas like reasoning, math, general knowledge, and tool use. Meta says it matches the performance of the larger Llama 3.1 405B model but is far more efficient and affordable. Next up is Llama 4, said Zuckerberg.

Llama has become one of the most downloaded AI models, with over 650 million downloads, and is gaining traction as an industry standard, said Zuckerberg.

The release is part of Meta’s push to make advanced AI tools more accessible. As an open-source model, Llama 3.3 allows developers worldwide to use and modify it for creative, practical, or innovative applications, said a spokesperson to iPhone in Canada in a statement.

Llama 3.3 is now available for download on Meta’s website and Hugging Face, with deployment options through partner platforms. “We are committed to building the most advanced AI in the world,” concluded Zuckerberg.
