Alongside the OLED upgrade, Apple plans to eliminate the notch from the display, opting for a hole-punch camera design that could increase usable screen space and deliver a more immersive visual experience.

OLED, short for organic light-emitting diode, is expected to bring significant enhancements to the MacBook Pro displays. Unlike current mini-LED technology, OLED allows for individual pixel control, enabling sharper colors and higher contrast ratios. It also offers energy efficiency, potentially boosting battery life while supporting slimmer device designs.

The new MacBook Pro models are rumoured to feature a hole-punch camera, replacing the controversial notch. While specific details about the camera implementation remain uncertain, Apple might expand the functionality seen in the iPhone’s Dynamic Island for macOS, delivering dynamic alerts for battery and system notifications.

This redesign will likely debut with 14-inch and 16-inch models, marking the first major overhaul since 2021.

Apple’s shift to OLED technology is expected to drive demand within the notebook market significantly. Reports suggest that OLED laptops will see a compound annual growth rate of 37% between 2023 and 2031, fueled partly by Apple’s adoption of this advanced display technology.

In the interim, Apple is expected to focus on performance upgrades for its MacBook Pro lineup. Models slated for release in 2025 may include updated M-series chips like the M5 Pro and M5 Max, but no major design changes are anticipated until the OLED transition in 2026.

Meanwhile, the MacBook Air is projected to retain its notch until at least 2028.
