TikTok Canada Files Appeal to Challenge Operations Shutdown

TikTok Canada has applied to appeal the recent federal government-ordered shutdown. The organization announces it has filed a Notice of Application for Judicial Review.

In a recent statement, TikTok Canada declared it has “filed a notice of application in federal court to challenge the government’s order to shut TikTok Canada’s operations.” The Canadian arm of TikTok argues that the federal government’s decision to shut down operations in the country would “eliminate the jobs and livelihoods of our hundreds of dedicated local employees.

“We believe it’s in the best interest of Canadians to find a meaningful solution and ensure that a local team remains in place, alongside the TikTok platform,” TikTok Canada says.

Last month, the Canadian federal government greenlit an official order to shut down TikTok Canada’s operations after a detailed national security review. According to François-Philippe Champagne, Canada’s Minister of Innovation, TikTok Canada’s operations raised the national security risks of China-based parent company ByteDance. The review was carried through the Investment Canada Act, which enables the government to probe foreign investments that may pose national security risks.

To address such concerns, TikTok Canada’s offices were ordered to close. However, the federal government isn’t going as far as to outright ban TikTok from being accessible in Canada. “The government is not blocking Canadians’ access to the TikTok application or their ability to create content. The decision to use a social media application or platform is a personal choice,” Champagne said at the time.

TikTok Canada claims that the federal government order ” “failed to engage with TikTok Canada on the purported substance of the concerns that led to the (order).” The company goes on to state it supports important Canadian public policy. With issues across the federal and provincial levels, TikTok Canada is working with Elections Canada and Privy Council Office on partnerships to “support election integrity on the TikTok platform.”

Garbage company, garbage media consumption method, garbage content.
Full of scam products, 30 second videos that are usually lacking crutial information. Let's remove the ability for people to have an attention span. Let's also make sure people can put crap garbage audio that has nothing to do with the content of the video so that people with visual impairments have even more barriers to cross. But that's okay, because apparently even the website and mobile app are almost completely unusable to a screen reader user. They're not missing much.
