Apple Intelligence Now Takes a Bigger Slice of Your iPhone Storage

Apple Intelligence is supposed to be the company’s AI smarts across the iPhone, iPad and Mac.

With the latest iOS 18.2 update, more Apple Intelligence features debuted, such as Genmoji, Image Playground, Visual Intelligence and more, including support for Canada English. This increase in features also means Apple Intelligence now requires more device storage from your iPhone, iPad and Mac.

Just how much? According to an updated Apple Support document (via 9to5Mac), the storage requirement for Apple Intelligence is now 7GB, up from 4GB. That’s a 75% increase that could continue to climb as Apple Intelligence features grow.

What does this mean for end users? Apple Intelligence now requires more of your precious device storage. So those with the bare minimum 128GB for an iPhone, for example, you now have 7GB taken away just for Apple Intelligence alone. It means you may have to fork out more dollars for increased storage the next time you upgrade your Apple device.

Below are Apple Intelligence device requirements as per Apple:

  • iPhone 16 models, iPhone 15 Pro, or iPhone 15 Pro Max; any iPad with A17 Pro or M1 and later; Mac with M1 or later

  • iOS 18.1 or later, iPadOS 18.1 or later, or macOS Sequoia 15.1 or later

  • Device language and Siri language set to the same supported language

  • 7 GB of storage (was 4GB)

It’s too bad Apple Intelligence can’t be optional, as some users are saying the AI feature is eating up battery life like crazy on the iPhone.

I tried it for awhile on my 16 Pro, but now have it turned off. Apple Intelligence is an oxymoron: it seems to get in the way more often than not. People keep saying, “It will get better” but until then I’ll be leaving it turned off.

Who says I'm going to update. I mean if you had the opt of forgoing Apple Intelligence that I know I won't use much of – do you really need Genmojis, Image Playground, Visual Intelligence?

I pass.

Yes it is optional. It is easily turned off in just 3 taps. Go to Settings/choose Apple Intelligence & Siri/Turn off the slider for Apple Intelligence. Couldn’t be simpler.

I think you are missing the gist of the article here. Yes you can turn it off but the software programming is still using the storage space in your phone.

Please stop commenting on things you don’t understand. It’s off. By default. And if you choose to opt in, only then does it begin to download the different components, which takes a long time.

Yes and two people have now explained it to you. Yet you seem to be under the impression that there is some sort of conspiracy abound, to trick you. And resort to ad hominem attacks? Since you are so mistrusting, maybe you should put in at least minimal effort to do your own research? Clearly you have never even looked at one of the millions of tutorials on setting up Apple Int.

The support document linked in this very article (if you bothered to read it) clearly states:

“To get started with Apple Intelligence after you update your device, go to Settings, select Apple Intelligence & Siri, then select Get Apple Intelligence. After you select Get Apple Intelligence, on-device Apple Intelligence models will start downloading (time to download varies). For the fastest experience, keep your device connected to Wi-Fi and power while models are downloading.”

For the record, you were the one who started with the cheap shots.
There was no saying anything about more information on links.
In fact, talk about not reading the article, it clearly states " It’s too bad Apple Intelligence can’t be optional"

Dude, maybe more oatmeal in the morning would help.

Apple's growing focus on advanced intelligence features is exciting, but the increasing install sizes can be challenging for users with limited storage. Tools like TunesKit iOS System Recovery can be incredibly helpful for resolving any performance issues caused by storage constraints or system glitches.
