‘How to Delete Facebook’ is Trending Amid Meta’s Policy Change

In the wake of Meta’s decision to overhaul its content moderation policies, Google searches for how to delete accounts on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads have skyrocketed across the United States, TechCrunch is reporting.

This surge in user interest follows CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s announcement that the company will discontinue its third-party fact-checking system and relax previous restrictions on political content in user feeds.

Data from Google Trends shows a dramatic spike in searches such as “how to permanently delete Facebook,” which has reached a maximum interest score of 100—the highest rating Google assigns to query popularity. Other related terms like “how to delete Instagram account without logging in,” “Facebook alternatives,” and “how to quit Facebook” have seen popularity surge by over 5,000%.

This wave of search activity highlights growing dissatisfaction among users concerned about the implications of Meta’s loosened content policies, including the spread of misinformation, hate speech, and violent rhetoric on its platforms.

Meta had previously implemented tighter content moderation and fact-checking policies to combat harmful content. These measures followed a series of scandals, such as the role Facebook played in enabling coordinated calls for violence during the January 6, 2021, Capitol insurrection.

Further criticism stems from Meta’s role in the 2017 Rohingya crisis in Myanmar, where the platform was used to incite violence and genocide. These incidents highlighted the real-world dangers posed by unregulated online spaces, pressuring Meta to prioritize user safety.

Now, however, Meta plans to replace third-party fact-checkers with a “community notes” system, akin to one implemented by Elon Musk’s X. This change aims to rely on user feedback to provide context for posts rather than expert-reviewed content oversight.

Blah, blah, blah. This is just another ignorant and absurd overreaction. I'm not a fan of Zuck/Meta/FB but as usual morons are overacting. Meta is just laying off their fact checkers. They are being replaced with a similar system Dr Evil has on X: Community reporting.

And Trump is like a weak bullying douche in a playground. Creating a lot of noise and trying to intimidate others. And when someone stands up to him, he'll just run away. Even if White OJ manages to convince whichever Canadian government in power to become a 51st state, it'll take a long time to change everything including both constitutions,. It's not a simple undertaking. By that time, Trump will either share a grave next JC or will have moved to another country.

This is real easy to say when you're not part of the demographic that's now officially defined as an 'it' by the world's biggest social media platform

I've noticed FB has backed off enforcing account cloning. ie when people leave their friends list open (the default) for anyone to see and those that open a clone account with copied profile picture and start tricking friends to accept friend requests from them. Then pretend to be you and scam unsuspecting friends out of money etc. The most common "hacking" thing that happens now on FB.

FB continues to make "show the world my friends list" as the default. The default should be "only my friends see my friends list".

Now when we report these fake accounts FB, more often than not, comes back saying they are not violating the rules and let's it continue. So they've quietly been cutting back enforcement on that as well.

Not a good sign.

I know a few folks that have abandons FB for that reason alone.
