OpenAI’s Hockey-Puck AI Speaker Could Cost Nearly $600 CAD

OpenAI is working on its first hardware device and now we have more details, according to one report.

The new device is said to be a doughnut-shaped smart speaker designed in collaboration with former Apple design chief Jony Ive, reports Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

The battery-powered gadget is roughly the size of a hockey puck and lacks a regular screen. Designed to be easily carried around the house with one hand, the device uses premium materials such as high-quality metal. It also features moving parts that shift dynamically to give the hardware personality and bring interactivity while in use.

Hardware features include built-in speaker grills, microphones, dynamic LED lights to signal active listening, and a camera sensor array that observes your nearby environments. Functionally, the speaker expands on ChatGPT Voice Mode, leveraging advanced AI models to learn your habits over time and act as an interactive personalized companion.

OpenAI targets a release window in 2027, with internal discussions placing the expected price point between $300 and $400 USD, which works out to $420 to $560 CAD, roughly after current exchange rates. Are you ready to drop that amount of cash on a smart AI speaker?

The report comes during an ongoing legal dispute with Apple over intellectual property claims. OpenAI internal reviews concluded the device design does not violate Apple trade secrets, according to sources familiar with the matter, says Gurman.
