iPhone 17 Pro to Reportedly Feature Triple 48MP Cameras

Both the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max models releasing this year are expected to feature a rear camera setup consisting entirely of 48-megapixel lenses, according to a new report MacRumors.

The report claims that the iPhone 17 Pro lineup will boast three advanced 48MP cameras:

  • A 1/1.3″ Fusion primary lens
  • A 48MP ultra-wide lens
  • An upgraded 48MP Tetraprism telephoto lens

This marks a significant leap from the current iPhone 16 Pro models, which feature a 12MP telephoto lens. Both the primary and telephoto lenses are rumored to use a hybrid glass-plastic construction, enhancing image clarity while maintaining a lightweight design.

This update, previously predicted by analysts like Jeff Pu and Ming-Chi Kuo, promises vastly improved photo and video quality, particularly in low-light conditions. The upgraded Tetraprism telephoto camera is likely to improve zoom capabilities significantly.

According to Kuo, the lens system will feature a redesigned prism with a shorter form factor, reducing the camera’s height while optimizing its zoom performance. Earlier reports hinted at this upgrade being exclusive to the Pro Max variant, but the latest rumor suggests it will be included in both Pro models.

In addition to the enhanced rear camera system, Apple is reportedly upgrading the entire iPhone 17 series with a 24MP front-facing camera. This lens, featuring a six-piece design, has been hinted at by multiple sources and is expected to improve image quality and low-light performance for selfies and video calls.

Based on earler reports, both Pro models are also expected to showcase a redesigned half-aluminum, half-glass back cover and a new rectangular camera module. This design could help accommodate the advanced camera technology while contributing to a more streamlined appearance.

Apple needs to catch up to the competition, if not AI, at least in better cameras.

According to who? The masses in North America, EU, Australia, Japan, and Taiwan will buy anything from Apple regardless of quality. It's all about branding and conforming to the status quo.

Whoo Whee!

It's kind of neat how Samsung releases first in January and apple has all the way until Sepember to make last minute changes to their product, always giving it a unique twist.

Dynamic island is pretty cool and really I've not seen Android do anything really about it, at least on my Fold 5.

More mega pixels doesn’t guarantee the better image quality or better low light performance unless the physical sensor size also increases. They can do pixel binning for low light, but by combining 4 (or more) adjacent pixels into one that effectively reduces the resolution.
