Apple Accused of Using Toxic Materials in Watch Bands

A new class-action lawsuit filed against Apple in California claims that the company uses toxic materials in some Apple Watch bands — reports MacRumors.

The lawsuit, submitted this week, alleges that Apple engaged in false advertising and violated multiple consumer laws by marketing the Apple Watch as a health and wellness product without disclosing that some of its bands contain harmful materials.

Plaintiffs cited a recent study that purportedly discovered “high levels” of “forever chemicals,” particularly per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), in some smartwatch bands. PFAS is often used in synthetic rubber to protect from discoloration and stains. If absorbed through the skin, the substance can cause health problems.

While Apple wasn’t specifically named for using PFAS in the study, it said it tested smartwatch bands from Apple, Nike, Fitbit, and Google. The class-action petition, however, asserts that “elevated levels” of the PFAS fluorine were detected in the more “expensive” smartwatch bands, supposedly including some Apple Watch bands.

Any customer in the U.S. (Canadians get left out once again, although we should soon start receiving payments for the Canadian iPhone Power Management Class Action Settlement) who purchased an Apple Watch Sport Band, Nike Sport Band, or Ocean Band is listed as part of the potential class. A judge still has to decide if the class action has any merit and should proceed.

In response to the accusations, Apple maintained that its Watch bands are completely safe to wear. “Apple Watch bands are safe for users to wear,” the tech giant told Macrumors in a statement. “In addition to our own testing, we also work with independent laboratories to conduct rigorous testing and analysis of the materials used in our products, including Apple Watch bands.”

Apple recently settled a $95 million USD (about $137 million CAD) class action lawsuit in the U.S. over claims that Siri spied on users’ private conversations.
