New Experimental Features Available to Test for YouTube Premium Subscribers

YouTube is rolling out a selection of new experimental features for its YouTube Premium members. These features allow users to further tailor the playback speed of videos, offer smart downloads for Shorts, and introduce the Jump Ahead web experience.
From now until a designated date in February, YouTube is experimenting with select features, as reported by Android Police. Certain YouTube Premium members will have access to these features as they roll out to paying subscribers. One of the more exciting and chaotic features is the ability to control playback speeds and adjust them to 4x the regular speed. Some users enjoy listening to podcasts or video essays at 1.5x or even 2x. However, 4x video playback speed is a great departure from even those more adopted speeds. The ability to watch videos at 4x playback speed is available on iOS and Android and will be supported until February 26th.
In addition to faster playback speeds, YouTube is supporting a suite of experimental features. This includes:
- Jump Ahead Web for web browsers (avail. until February 5th)
- Shorts Smart Downloads for iOS (avail. until February 19)
- Shorts Picture-in-Picture for iOS (avail. until February 19)
- High-quality audio at 256kbps for iOS and Android (avail. until February 22nd)
The latter is another notable feature of YouTube. Jump Ahead for browsers allows users to utilize a button to automatically skip to “the content they care about faster,” according to YouTube. Rather than having to scrub through a video’s timeline, users can just select to skip to a topic or conversation that interests them the most.
YouTube Premium is the monthly subscription offered by the company. In Canada, YouTube Premium is available for $12.99/month for an individual plan or $22.99/month for a five-person Family Plan. YouTube supports a $7.99 Student monthly plan. Premium offers perks like ad-free viewing, offline downloads, and access to YouTube Music.
