Google Maps ‘Gulf of America’ is Here: What it Looks Like in Canada

Google maps gulf america.

Google Maps has started displaying “Gulf of America” instead of “Gulf of Mexico” for users in the U.S., following an official update by the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS).

Google previously teased this was coming, as part of President Donald Trump’s executive order on the matter, signed on his Inauguration Day. The change was made to reflect the Gulf’s economic and strategic importance to the nation (America, f**k yeah!).

According to Google, the change aligns with its standard practice of reflecting official geographic updates. In Mexico, the body of water will still appear as the “Gulf of Mexico,” while users in other countries will see both names listed together.

In Canada? As Google states, we still see ‘Gulf of Mexico’. But in brackets below, ‘Gulf of America’ shows.

The name displayed in Google Maps depends on the user’s location settings, which are determined by their device’s operating system, SIM card, and network. On desktop, it is based on the selected region in search settings or the device’s location.

This change by the U.S. is debatable, as the Gulf of Mexico has long been the recognized name internationally. However, Google is simply following the naming convention updated by U.S. authorities.

Next up, Apple Maps will likely have to update soon to match the GNIS change for this (no word on when Google Maps will show Canada as the 51st state though…).

One can see the worst is yet to come,
When the rest of the world put Gulf of Mexico above Gulf of America

Just wait and see when the ego gets going !

Bigly. But he's already got Repugnicant lawmakers seeking to change the Constitution so that he can get another term.
Tht's assuming the Constitution is still in play in four years time – the last three weeks suggest otherwise. Maybe Don Jr will just inherit it, like in all good tinpot regimes.

Anyone who's against becoming part of the US needs to stop repeating this as twisted humour. It's normalizing a brazen threat to sovereignty, we shouldn't be doing their dirty work for them.

Let's be clear, 51st state implies autonomy and right to vote. They won't give that to us if they annex us, we'll be their 6th inhabited territory, or 15th including uninhabited ones. Zero representation in House or Senate, zero electoral college votes, zero say in who becomes president, assuming they have any free and fair elections in the future at all.

Totally agree. I can't see Trump wanting our voters since they'd skew Democrat. And if he allowed freedom of movement, we'd start competing for jobs with "real" Americans in the sunnier states. Wouldn't seem very MAGA. Also pretty weird that he wants to tighten up our border, but at the same time erase our border. Something doesn't add up here. Maybe he'd ask some neighbouring countries to take us Canadians so that he could "clean up" Canada for some "real" American workers. Can't wait to see Trumps new "Riviera of the North" – but we might have to view it from Iceland. If they will take us. I hear Greenland is already accounted for.

The US controls 12 miles of the coast from their shoreline. The rest? Not so. Delusional much? And Google – like so may of the US's tech crowd – genuflecting to the Uberfuhrer.
I look forward to Mexico deciding to rename the Gulf of Mexico – completely within their borders – to the 'F*ck Trump Sea' or perhaps, 'Stormy Daniels Bay'.

Apple is joining in with this madness and when it rolls out fully, it'll be international. Clearly, Tim handing over a personal 'donation' of $1mil for the Inauguration to show his fealty wasn't enough…
