NDP Slams Bell’s Job Cuts, Calls It ‘Corporate Greed’
The NDP is slamming Bell plan to cut jobs, calling it a case of “corporate greed at its worst.”
In a joint statement on Tuesday, NDP MPs Matthew Green and Niki Ashton said Bell is prioritizing shareholders over workers by outsourcing jobs and raising telecom prices.
Bell recently offer a buyout to 1,200 unionized employees represented by Unifor. The union blasted the decision and now the NDP is following suit. The news comes again after Bell’s annual Let’s Talk day for mental health initiatives. Employees considering the buyout may need some mental health support, with their jobs on the line.
“For far too long, Canada’s telecom giants have been putting shareholders before their workers, continuing to outsource jobs and jack up telecom prices on Canadians,” the statement read. “Instead of outsourcing Canadian jobs, Bell should be investing in Canada.”
The NDP also criticized the Trudeau Liberal government for allowing telecom companies to profit while receiving public subsidies and warned that Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives would promote a “Bay Street First” strategy that puts profits ahead of workers.
The party says it would hold Bell accountable through regulators like the CRTC and push for consequences. “The NDP is the only party standing up for Canadians against corporate greed, and we would bring in consequences for telecom companies, like ending federal contracts, for showing Canadian workers the door and cutting off their livelihood for a profit.”

NDP…. 🤢🤮
All they try to do is shore up some union support (which they have anyway…people that are asking the government to nationalize companies) but it amounts to nothing for Bhell.
These telcos have the government in their pocket so they act with impunity….but hey, we don't want competition, do we.
A very stinging comment yet factual true. We don't allow foreign companies in yet complain when our own take advantage of us.
It isn't easy for me to say but I agree with the NDP here and Bell is being greedy but as you mentioned, our governments allow it.
Right, I not disagreeing with NDP on principle (firing people) but condamning their empty rhetoric….they kept the lieberals in power and all their cronies are free to do as they please with impunity.
And it's just constant.. I look back on the 20 years of the past NDP, and they're like homeless people. "Give me money"… Uhh then what? No Damn Plan after that.
Youi would prefer the conservatives giving money to companies that then outsource Canadian jobs to places like Morocco, the Philippines, or Romania. You have pretty pathetic logic
See Gary, this is the problem though. It’s called free enterprise, the company can choose to do what it wants, with it’s employees. When the government says who you need to hire (like the now cancelled DEI program) or when you can and cannot fire, the company is no longer free to choose. I’m never going to vote for a government that says the biggest winner needs to pay the biggest looser (oh wait, the Liberals have been trying to equalize every hard worker into that for decades).
NDP -> No Damn Plan
How about the fact that Bell and Telus for example outsource jobs to places like Morocco and Romania Romania just to name a couple and yet get no revenue from those countries. They get their revenue from the backs of Canadians while Bell outsources jobs abroad. Instead of crying about union support which BTW at least supports Canada Canada , start complaining about employing people in countries that don't dont even produce revenue for them. I find your logic and attitude rather sickening.
If you think unions are progressive and help move the country forward, I have a bridge in London to sell you.
Also, “sickening” is someone like you that instead of articulating an argument (I won’t dispute job outsourcing for instance) tries to shut others down by bullying them.
Last I checked, I didn’t have to ask for your permission to have an opinion.
That might change with the help of nominds reelecting a lieberal / Endeepee government.
