Amazon Takes Creative Control of James Bond Franchise

Amazon MGM Studios has struck a deal with longtime Bond producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli to take creative control of the James Bond franchise.

The agreement forms a joint venture, allowing Amazon to oversee future 007 films, while Wilson and Broccoli remain co-owners.

“Since his theatrical introduction over 60 years ago, James Bond has been one of the most iconic characters in filmed entertainment,” said Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, in a statement.

“We are grateful to the late Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman for bringing James Bond to movie theatres around the world, and to Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli for their unyielding dedication and their role in continuing the legacy of the franchise that is cherished by legions of fans worldwide. We are honoured to continue this treasured heritage, and look forward to ushering in the next phase of the legendary 007 for audiences around the world,” said Hopkins.

Wilson, involved with Bond movies for nearly 60 years, is stepping away from producing to focus on art and charitable projects. Broccoli also plans to shift her focus to other ventures after working closely with four different Bond actors.

“My life has been dedicated to maintaining and building upon the extraordinary legacy that was handed to Michael and me by our father, producer Cubby Broccoli. I have had the honour of working closely with four of the tremendously talented actors who have played 007 and thousands of wonderful artists within the industry. With the conclusion of No Time to Die and Michael retiring from the films, I feel it is time to focus on my other projects,” said Broccoli.

The James Bond film series began in 1962, launched by Albert “Cubby” Broccoli, before Barbara and stepson Michael took over. In 2022, Amazon acquired MGM, gaining the rights to distribute past Bond films. With this new deal, Amazon MGM Studios now has full creative control over future productions, marking a significant shift for the franchise.

Back in December, rumours claimed the next Bond movie was on ice, after there was friction between Amazon and Broccoli.

The deal comes amid growing speculation about the future of James Bond, as it has been four years since the release of No Time to Die—Daniel Craig’s final appearance as 007. With Amazon now leading the franchise, changes are expected, though no official announcements have been made. Come on guys, let’s release a Bond movie already!

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos asked people on Instagram today, “who’d you pick as the next Bond?” Quite honestly, Craig did a great job and he should get another crack at it.
