Apple is reportedly planning to equip its upcoming iPhone 17 Pro models with 12GB of RAM to enhance its artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities (via 9to5Mac).
The rumour, initially suggested by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo in August 2024 following the unveiling of Apple Intelligence at WWDC 2024, has gained further traction.
Recently, Jeff Pu of GFHK Tech Research corroborated this information, indicating that the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will feature 12GB of RAM, an increase from the current 8GB in the iPhone 16 Pro models.
Apple Intelligence requires a minimum of 8GB of RAM to function effectively. This requirement has influenced Apple’s hardware decisions, leading to increased memory in its devices. For instance, the iPhone 16e, launched in February 2025, comes with 8GB of RAM to support Apple Intelligence.
The decision to upgrade to 12GB of RAM in the iPhone 17 Pro models is likely driven by the need to accommodate more advanced AI features. As AI applications become increasingly complex, they demand more memory to operate efficiently.
