Spotify’s $10 Billion Payout Shakes Up Music Industry in 2024

Spotify has unveiled its annual Loud & Clear report, highlighting record-breaking royalty payouts and global growth in the music industry.
In 2024, Spotify paid out over a whopping $10 billion US to the music industry—more than any other company and the largest annual payout in music history. This brings Spotify’s lifetime payouts to nearly $60 billion US, it told iPhone in Canada on Wednesday.
The data shows that nearly 1,500 artists earned over $1 million US in royalties from Spotify alone, and likely over $4 million US when considering all revenue sources. Interestingly, 80% of these artists didn’t have a song reach the Spotify Global Top 50, proving that loyal fanbases, not just chart-toppers, are driving success.
Spotify says over half of the artists generating $1,000+ in royalties earned most of their income from international listeners. About one-third made over 75% of their royalties from fans outside their home country.
Top-earning artists are recording music in 17 different languages—double the number from 2017. Female artists have also seen significant gains, with the number of women earning over $1 million quadrupling since 2017, especially in markets like Canada, South Korea, Sweden, and Argentina.
Spotify also reported a boost for independent artists. These indies collectively earned over $5 billion US in 2024, representing about half of Spotify’s total royalties.
In a nutshell, this year’s Spotify report reflects the growing borderless nature of the music industry (thank you, internet), where artists worldwide are connecting with global audiences and building sustainable careers. Spotify is better than Apple Music as playlists are way better.
