Spotify Paid $10 Billion to the Music Industry in 2024

Spotify paid out a whopping $10 billion USD to the music industry last year for the music streamed on its platform, setting yet another record for the highest annual music payment from any single source.

The company’s 2024 payout accounts for a massive chunk of the almost $60 billion USD it has funnelled to music labels and artists since its inception in 2006. It also represents a tenfold increase from 2014, when Spotify’s contribution to global recorded music revenues for the year was just $1 billion.

According to Spotify, this growth and its success as the most popular subscription service for music streaming comes down to its superior user retention — driven by Spotify’s personalization, curation, and product innovation, the company’s ad-supported free tier, and widespread availability.

Spotify and its fellow music streaming services are promoting the behaviour of paying for music streaming. “The system we’ve built together is working, and where we are now is only the beginning,” Spotify’s Music Business VP, David Kaefer, said in a blog post. He added that over 500 million people pay for music streaming across all services today.

Spotify’s estimates showed that about 10,000 artists made at least $10,000 on the platform in 2014. Today, the company said more than 10,000 artists are generating over $100,000 on Spotify.

Per an IFPI report, Spotify made up almost a third of the world’s recorded music streaming revenue last year. What’s more, a study from MIDiA Research indicated that Spotify is responsible for over half of indie music labels’ and artists’ streaming revenue.

“Our goal is to help artists get their work in front of existing and future fans, continue to innovate on their behalf, and deliver it in a way that inspires people to pay for it,” continued Kaefer. “Onboarding people to paid streaming is precisely what has increased our payouts—tenfold—over the past decade.”

Looking to the future, Kaefer concluded that Spotify wants to work toward collectively hitting 1 billion paid subscribers across all music streaming services.

Spotify recently celebrated 10 years in Canada. Earlier this month, the company launched the Spotify Partner Program in Canada with new monetization options.
