How to Make WhatsApp Your Default Calling App on iPhone

In its latest beta release for iOS, WhatsApp has introduced the capability to set itself as the default app for both messaging and calling functions. The feature is available to try in the latest WhatsApp beta version 25.8.10.74.

With the release of WhatsApp’s latest iOS beta, select beta testers can now designate it as their default app for sending messages and making calls. This means that actions such as tapping a phone number or initiating a new message can automatically utilize WhatsApp instead of the native iOS apps.

This integration is particularly beneficial for users who predominantly use WhatsApp for their communication needs, streamlining their interactions by reducing the need to switch between different apps.

The development aligns with Apple’s recent policy changes introduced in iOS 18.2, which allow users to select third-party applications as defaults for various functions, including web browsing, email, and now, messaging and calling. Initially, this flexibility was extended to users within the EU.  However, Apple has since expanded this feature globally.

To configure WhatsApp as the default messaging and calling app on your iPhone, you must first update to the latest beta version available through the TestFlight program. Once updated, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Navigate to Apps.
  3. Select Default Apps.
  4. Choose Messaging and Calling options.
  5. From the list of available applications, select WhatsApp.

After completing these steps, WhatsApp will handle all messaging and calling tasks initiated from system-wide actions, such as tapping on phone numbers or message links.

Currently, this feature is accessible to a subset of beta testers using WhatsApp beta for iOS 25.8.10.74. As beta testing progresses and any potential issues are addressed, it is anticipated that WhatsApp will roll out this functionality to all users in a future stable release.

I can add WhatsApp as my default calling and messaging app. I’m using the regular version on iPhone (non-beta).
