Ubisoft Forms New Subsidiary with Tencent for Assassin’s Creed and More

Ubisoft has unveiled plans to establish a dedicated subsidiary focused on its flagship franchises: Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six, which includes a significant investment from Chinese tech giant Tencent.

Tencent will acquire a 25% minority stake for €1.16 billion (approximately $1.3 billion) in the newly formed subsidiary, which is valued at around €4 billion (approximately $4.3 billion).

According to Ubisoft, the subsidiary will encompass development teams from various global studios, including those in Montréal, Quebec, Sherbrooke, Saguenay, Barcelona, and Sofia. These teams will focus on enhancing the quality of narrative-driven single-player experiences, expanding multiplayer offerings, introducing free-to-play elements, and integrating advanced social features.

“”With the creation of a dedicated subsidiary that will spearhead development for three of our largest franchises and the onboarding of Tencent as a minority investor, we are crystallizing the value of our assets, and strengthening our balance sheet,” said Yves Guillemot, Ubisoft’s co-founder and CEO.

This collaboration is expected to bolster Ubisoft’s financial position, providing the company with increased flexibility to invest in other key franchises and new intellectual properties. The influx of capital from Tencent will also aid in reducing Ubisoft’s debt.

The deal is anticipated to close by the end of the year, pending regulatory approvals. Upon completion, the subsidiary will operate with a dedicated leadership team and board of directors, ensuring focused management and strategic direction for the included franchises.
