How to Watch This Week’s Nintendo Switch 2 Direct and What to Expect

This week, Nintendo is hosting its long-awaited Nintendo Switch 2 Direct. The live-streamed event, which will take place on April 2, is expected to detail the company’s upcoming new hardware.

Back in January, Nintendo revealed the first look at the Nintendo Switch 2. At the time, Nintendo gave a short highlight of the new console, sporting a larger display and other updates. At the end of the video, the company announced that on April 2 at 9 AM ET/6 AM PT, the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct will be held and will provide more information.

The time has finally come. As we get ever closer to the Nintendo Switch 2 hitting the market, this is the next major beat in the pre-launch cycle. “Join us on April 2nd at 6 am PT for Nintendo Direct: Nintendo Switch 2 – 4.2.2025, where we will share a closer look at Nintendo Switch 2,” the company announced on X (formerly Twitter)

So, what can we expect to see from Nintendo? It’s likely we’ll hear more in-depth details about the differences between the original Switch console and the new hardware. Although Nintendo did announce that the Nintendo Switch 2 will feature a larger display, we still don’t know how large the screen is nor what kind of panel is being used. The company also confirmed that the hardware supports two USB-C ports as well as a 3.5mm headphone jack. However, Bluetooth support and other features are yet to be determined.

From a design perspective, the Nintendo Switch 2 is undeniably larger, bridging the gap between the original hardware and a Steam Deck. Its larger kickstand pops out from the device’s body, allowing the unit to lean into a 35-degree axis. The Joy-Con controllers have also been redesigned with some sort of magnetic locking system. Nintendo has also shown the controllers support a sort of mouse-like optical sensor. These details warrant further explanations in the upcoming Direct.

Of course, all eyes will be on Nintendo to reveal a launch lineup for the Nintendo Switch 2. The aforementioned video did tease a brand new Mario Kart game. Eagle viewers were able to notice that the game’s teaser showed 24 starting positions. Speculation rose as to whether the game will offer 24-player multiplayer support. However, beyond a possible Mario Kart title, we still don’t know the new games that’ll be launching alongside the hardware. Nor any idea of Switch 2-exclusive games that’ll launch in 2025.

Finally, and somewhat most importantly, Nintendo may take the opportunity to announce the launch details for the hardware. We still don’t know when the Nintendo Switch 2 will be available on the global market. Additionally, we will likely hear about local pricing as well as preorder availability.

These are all details that Nintendo will likely discuss during the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 Direct. While the live stream begins at 9 AM ET/6 AM PT, at the time of writing, we don’t know how long the event will last. If you’re eager to check it out, stay tuned to the official Nintendo YouTube channel. Keep an eye right here as we’ll be providing updates following the Nintendo Direct.
