Amazon Teaches Coding Through Indigenous Music to 30K Students

Amazon has relaunched its national education program Your Voice is Power, which combines computer science lessons with Indigenous music and social justice education.

The 2025 edition kicked off with a launch event in Regina, featuring a performance by JUNO Award-winning Cree artist Sebastian Gaskin.

The program is free for teachers and students in grades 7 to 12. It teaches basic coding through a platform called EarSketch, where students remix songs by Indigenous musicians. It also covers key topics in Indigenous history in Canada, like Residential Schools, the Sixties Scoop, and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action.

Amazon says the goal is to reach 30,000 students across Canada this year, up from 25,000 in 2024. The initiative is part of the Amazon Future Engineer Canada program and is run in partnership with the nonprofit TakingITGlobal and Amazon Music.

“Amazon is committed to making a positive impact on local communities, with a strong legacy of preparing young people for in-demand future careers working alongside partners like TakingITGlobal. Your Voice is Power has inspired thousands of students at a pivotal time in their education, and we’re excited to reach even more Canadians in 2025,” said Eva Lorenz, Country Manager at Amazon Canada, in an issued statement on Tuesday.

Students can enter a remix competition for a chance to win one of two $5,000 scholarships. The submission deadline is June 30, 2025.

Amazon Music has also released a special playlist tied to the program, featuring artists like Jayli Wolf, Twin Flames, and Dakota Bear.
