If you’ve ever picked up the next book in a series and couldn’t remember what happened last time, Amazon has a fix. A new Kindle feature called Recaps is now available for U.S. users, offering quick summaries of past books in popular eBook series.
Amazon says think of it like the “Previously on…” moments from your favourite TV shows — but for books. Recaps help readers refresh their memory on storylines and characters so they can jump back in without re-reading earlier volumes. This is helpful if you’re returning to a book that you’ve taken a break from for a while.
Recaps also warns you that there may be spoilers as character and plot info will be revealed if you click on a later book in a series, showing info from preceding books.
The feature covers thousands of best-selling English-language series, and works with books users have either purchased or borrowed. It’s available now on all Kindle devices, but only in the U.S. for now, and will roll out to the Kindle app for iOS soon.
Those in the U.S. can update their Kindle software and look for the “View Recaps” button on a series page or in the three-dot menu, according to Amazon last week.
It’s unclear when this Recaps feature will expand to Canada, but hopefully it does soon.
