PC Optimum Points Nightmare: Man Loses $43,000 Overnight

If you’re a collector of PC Optimum points, this might a cautionary tale if you have a huge balance saved up.

According to a CBC Go Public report, Frank Zhang spent years racking up PC Optimum points — 43 million in total, worth around a whopping $43,000—by chasing bonus offers and using his PC Mastercard.

But earlier this year, his account was suddenly locked, with no clear explanation from Loblaw, which offers the loyalty program across its store brands. “They control my points, but I can’t do anything,” Zhang told CBC’s Go Public.

Zhang is one of 17 million Canadians collecting PC Optimum points at stores like Real Canadian Superstore, Shoppers Drug Mart, and Esso. But he’s not alone in being frozen out. Dozens of users across Canada have reported similar issues — locked accounts, no answers, and no access to their points.

One common clause lets the company forfeit points for purchases that exceed “normal household use” — but the program doesn’t define what that means.

Zhang said he first received an automated message telling him to change his password. Later, he was told he violated the program’s terms, though the company never explained how.

Another user, Jeff Mack from Calgary, lost access to 1.5 million points. PC Optimum claimed he had multiple accounts, which Mack denies. Despite pushing for answers, he only got generic replies. After Go Public contacted Loblaw, Mack’s points were restored.

But in Zhang’s case, his account was permanently closed. Loblaw claimed he made purchases for resale and exceeded normal limits but refused to provide proof.

In 2024, customers used over $1 billion in Optimum points, according to Loblaw’s annual report, from over 17 million active members.

PC Optimum points are typically earned at a rate of 10 points per $1 spent at participating stores like Loblaws, Superstore, and Shoppers Drug Mart. The redemption value is fixed: 10,000 points equals $10, making each point worth 0.1 cents. Users can boost their earnings through in-app offers or by using the PC Financial Mastercard, which provides up to 30 points per $1 depending on where you shop. Regardless of how they’re earned, points always redeem at the same value.

I don’t know how much work is involved to bank up $43,000 worth of PC Optimum points, but to get locked out with no explanation sucks. I guess you take the risk if you bank up the points and don’t spend them, as the fine print lets companies have full control over your loyalty savings.

How can one household earn 43 million points in "normal household use"? Using a base earning rate of 15 points per $1 spent, that's about $2.8M.

Two points: he collected this many points over the span of 7 years and they are accusing him of breaking the User Agreement because he allegedly purchased the goods for resale. He denies it and Loblaw hasn’t provided any proof so far.

If you want to make extra money without leaving your house, this might be perfect for you. I started this part-time online job three months ago and last month, I earned $18,654. I didn’t need to be a tech expert or have any experience. The work is easy and the hours are flexible—I do it when I have time. All I had to do was sign up and follow a few simple steps. If you want to try it too, just go here and follow the instructions. It could be your next big thing.

There are rare cases of bonus points and discounts that far exceed the value of products purchased. Any long term member knows about the Cadbury Shoppers Drug Mart deal from around 15 years ago. The kids were lining up at our house that Halloween!
