Nintendo Switch 2 to Introduce Flexible Game-Key Cards
Nintendo has unveiled a new distribution method for its upcoming Switch 2 console: the Game-Key Card, which unlike traditional game cartridges, will serve as physical keys to download games from the internet (via .

As noted by Game Spot, Nintendo has confirmed that Game-Key Cards will not be tied to specific user accounts or consoles, allowing for greater flexibility in game sharing and resale.
Nintendo details that these Game-Key Cards differ from standard game cartridges by not containing the full game data. Instead, when inserted into a Switch 2 console, they initiate the download of the complete game via an internet connection.
Once downloaded, the Game-Key Card must remain inserted to play the game, functioning similarly to traditional physical media. An internet connection is required only for the initial download; subsequent gameplay does not necessitate being online.
“Key cards will start up on the console or system that it is slotted into, so it’s not tied to an account or anything,” said Nintendo’s Tetsuya Sasaki. This design allows users to lend, borrow, or resell Game-Key Cards, providing a level of flexibility akin to traditional physical game cartridges.

The introduction of Game-Key Cards appears to be a strategic response to the increasing file sizes of modern games, which often exceed the storage capacities of traditional cartridges. By utilizing Game-Key Cards, Nintendo can offer physical representations of games that require substantial storage.

Game key cards will only work as long as the servers are up. Once they retire the servers, having the game key card won't matter.
